BA in religion, MA in religion, Ph D in Biblical Studies(expected)  

What education or training do you recommend for students today who want to enter this field?

Master‘s degree and Ph D in relevant discipline. An undergraduate degree in the filed is helpful, but in my field(theology) it is not necessary.  

When you were in high school, did you know that you would enter this field?

No, I had no idea in high school. I enjoyed math and physics. In college I majored in religion - but I didn‘t get started on this career track until five years after graduation.
